kino residency: prints and drawings

My last Cafe Kino event was in November and I hung some prints and drawings around the gallery and invited some friends to play some music and records down in the basement. It was a fun year and this work is still hanging in Kino for the foreseeable future, so stop by and have a look if you are in town.

while this is going on, i guess i'll go around kino and hang pictures throughout the day, so the exhibition will be growing over time... i hope.

On Saturday I held the second event of my residency at Cafe Kino. I was really nervous but I think it was good. Lots of people came and everyone played really well and the artwork looked great! I've put links to the musicians under their pictures where possible, but I'd also like to mention the people who hung artworks: Oliver watson, Stephanie Newman, Michal William, Amy Parsons and Daniel Parsons.

The whole thing was recorded expertly by Philip Dodd onto four track tape and the sound was doen by a combinations of George, Michal, Lisa and Phil. And at one point, my Mum was doing the door. Thanks everyone for making it great! 

kino residency: event 2

So this is my second event at Cafe Kino and it will take place at 7pm on Saturday the 28th of April. It will be a Music and Pictures type event, similar to the ones we used to hold in the Scout Hut. There will be music and artwork hanging from bulldog clips around the room. I have also arranged for Kino to provide a little bit of free tea and cake for people. This will be the first of three unique Tiger & Panda performances that will take place over this year and will be recorded by Phil Dodd.

Tiger & Panda are Oliver Watson and Henry Ireland respectively. They have been playing together as Tiger & Panda since 2007. In 2009, David Burke joined the band as ‘Ox’. Steve ‘Otter’ Brett will also join them for this gig. They try to change their music a little between each performance and recording. Their performance on Saturday the 28^th of April will be the first of three completely unique Tiger & Panda performances that will take place at Café Kino over the course of 2012. These three performances will recorded on 4-track tape by Philip Dodd. At the end of the year, a copy of these recordings will be given to Café Kino as a thank you. They will also probably be made available to listen to and purchase, most likely through Polite Records.

Vase is a project by Stephen Lane. He will be joined on the 28^th by George McKenzie. In 2004, Lollipop Michael Keane wrote a review of Vase in which he said, “Vase actually is the Chippenham underground scene.” Since then, Stephen has relocated to Norwich, but he has maintained close ties with Bristol and its music. His songs are hushed, softly spoken over gently plucked Spanish guitar, often with some other instrumentation. Vase has released six cassette albums, five CD-R albums and two 7" vinyl records on hand idiom recordings.

Land’s End is Matthew Cheney. Matthew is best known for Arctic Circle, players of dreamy electronic pop. When I saw Land’s End play, it was a lovely wall of spidery looped guitar and voice, including a Syd Barrett cover. Matthew is still preparing what he will perform on the 28^th, but I can guarantee it will be amazing!

Headfall: ‘We’re not low-key, we’re no-key’. Headfall are a tight-loose noise collage with hypnotic rhythms, soft spoken word, shrieked vocals, jagged guitar, melodic guitar, squealing clarinet and super amazing harmonies that fly out of nowhere.

Last Friday, we put on a gig and art show at St Mary's Old Church in Stoke Newington, London, with Rob St John, Frozy and Tiger & Panda & Ox. It was a great evening and we were very grateful for everyone who played and attended and helped. We were especially grateful to John Field and St Mary's Art. If you are looking to put on an evening of music or anything, they only take a percentage of the door and run a bar for you and are generally helpful and encouraging. You can contact them here. Also, worth mentioning was Steve Brett, who came all the way from Bristol to play with Rob and also did the door while we played.

artist in residence: cafe kino

I'm really proud and excited to say that I have been asked to be artist in residence for 2012 at Bristol's Cafe Kino. Kino is a not-for-profit workers' co-op, owned and operated by its workers and run, in part, by volunteers. I love playing at Cafe Kino and have great respect for the principles by which they operate. They serve delicious vegan/vegetarian food and serve as an affordable arts and music space for their local community. I can't wait to contribute to this great place!

The main part of my residency will consist of the organization of a series of varied events over the course of the year. I'm pretty nervous because I want to do a good job but I'm also so excited!

the old fire station

The Old Fire Station art centre will be opening in Oxford next Saturday and I'm very proud to say that they will be stocking some of my work in their shop. The Old Fire Station is a multipurpose art centre working along side Crisis, offering art courses and workshops to homeless people. I am really pleased to have been asked to sell my work at this place and help support this homeless charity as it is something I care a whole lot about.

For those who still check this blog regularly, I'm sorry the posts have been so sparse. It's been a hectic few months. I will have a few projects getting finished soon and will hopefully be posting a little more regularly. Last night was our Oxjam performance and we had a great time, with thanks to a whole lot of great friends who came along and spent the evening with us.

e17 art trail

Last night, I went to Black Horse Road Studios for the preview of their stop on the E17 Art Trail. There were some great performances and sculptures, including sculptures by Turnhurst.

They had also produced the above publication to sell alongside their show. The theme of the publication was the relationship artists and craftspeople have with their working and living environments. I got to contribute the above spread, which I was happy to do because the publication over all looks great.

On Thursday the 27th of April, Libros Mutantes held a self-publishing fair at La Casa Encendida in Madrid in Spain, and my mini-story 5 years set adrift was exhibited (somewhere) in it.

I love the look of the space and it was nice of them to ask me to take part.

message 43 symposium

Yesterday I went to Plymouth for a symposium, organised by Message, a research group including several of my former tutors at the University of Plymouth. It was an excellent day filled with exciting talks and two brilliant exhibitions.

The theme for the day was 'text + image = message ^n', the power of combining text and image in visual communication.

In November, Bob Notley is exhibiting his artwork at the Gateway Gallery in Luton. I am really looking forward to this. Should be fantastic!

1:12 perfect world at hauser & wirth

Last night was the opening of Hauser & Wirth's posthumous exhibition of the scale model of Jason Rhoades Perfect World (originally exhibited in 1999). The exhibition will run until the 18th of December in Hauser & Wirth's Piccadilly gallery.

The original sculpture was an expansive, ever growing world made from polished aluminium and wooden triangular segments. Rhoades made this model to give those who missed the original exhibition a chance to see it, as well as to allow himself to view it in it's entirity. Elements of the model have been exhibited many times in the last decade but this is the first time that all components will appear together.

This month, two of my zines (village pub cinema and food chain #1) are being exhibited in Istanbul for even my mum can make a book. The exhibtion is running until the 15th of October. The pictures look amazing. Wish I could have been there!

So I'm going to have a stall at this, hosted by these guys on Saturday the 10th of July in Stokes Croft. It is the last in a series of four art markets they have held. I went to one a couple of weeks ago and it was full of wonderful stuff, so I'm very excited. If you're around, you should come.

Also, sorry for not posting anything for such a long time. I have got to a stage in my project where I can take a break and do some more of this kind opf thing for a bit. I will try and update regularly for the next few months.

long week

Felix Frith's wall at the New Contemporaries exhibition in November

It has been a long week already, but I wanted to include some work that wasn't mine, so I've uploaded an image from an exhibition I attended last year that included the work of Felix Frith. Now I'm going to write a short list what's been happening this week.

I created a Folksy Shop. I'll add it to this page as a link shortly.

I contacted San Francisco based Art seller Little Paper Planes who have requested copies of The Object & Eternity and Village Pub Cinema to sell on their website. I sent them off today.

Olly and I visited our friend David to play some music and we formed a band, provisionally named 'Uncool'.

Tiger & Panda recorded a demo of a new EP to send to Phil Dodd, of Polite Records and the Boiler Room Brewery Blog. He will be recording us on the 30th and 31st of January for a 7" that will hopefully be ready by Autumn.
