The full Encyclopedia document is now available to download for free

It's formatted to fit nicely onto your e-reader or tablet device, if that's how you choose to live your life, otherwise it can be viewed on anything that reads .PDF format files.

So all the content is available for free. However, I've decided to offer a bespoke binding service, covering the cost of materials and labour for a hand bound artefact.

encyclopedia: a kind of press release

So it's finished. I'm pretty happy with it. It's more than a year's work.

I printed the inners at Hanway Print and silk-screen printed and bound the rest at home. The foil blocking on the cover was done at the Wyvern Bindery. I was looking into doing it myself but in the end the cost to set up would have been the same and I definitely wouldn't have done such a good job. I was also keen to give Wyvern Bindery some custom after all the friendly help I've had there in the past. They charge a setting fee of £25 for the first line of text and £5 for each additional line. Then it's about £5 per unit for every copy made after that. I think this is justifiable for an artist book.

Right now, I'm still figuring out how to present it. Doing readings is kind of limiting as this book kind of needs to be handled and leafed through to work as an artwork. My current plan is to hold some kind of event at Cafe Kino some time later this year.

I'm also thinking about offering a bespoke binding service for those who want their own personal copies. This makes more sense than mass producing and I don't want to charge for the content. Just the binding.

Speaking of which, I'm providing .PDF copies of this document free of charge to those who would like to read it (there will be some kind of 'this belongs to hrjireland' watermark on the pages) so if you'd like a copy, contact me somehow...

copper spires a5

Finally finished the A5 version of my copper spires sketchbooks and uploaded them to my folksy and etsy shops.

the print was inkier this time, but I think the addition of the nice turquoise book cloth keeps everything together.

So that's the second 'to-do' project of the year finished. I'm keen to get through all of these upcoming projects by the end of May, as that is when this year really speeds up...

corners: a zine about maths and art

Finally finished the first personal project of the year. It's a zine and print package about a pretend statistical analysis I did to kill some time in 2010. It's taken me a couple of years to get round to collecting all the raw material I collected into this 32 page zine. I limited the run to 20 and I tried to make it as nice as possible. I'm pleased with it. In some ways it's the most complex personal project I've made in the real world...

Oh year, and you can buy it from my folksy shop, and maybe some real shops in the coming months.

encyclopedia progress

I think I might actually have finished type-setting the encyclopedia! It  has taken a good long time but I'm pleased with it now. Next is binding...

I ordered some super nice binding cloth for it a couple of weeks ago and I'm gonna have a go at foil blocking for the title. Hooray!

copper spires sketch books

So, here is the first attempt. Two A6 hand bound sketchbooks with hard lino-printed covers. They look ok, though the trauma of getting the covers on means I can't really look at them right now. will need to leave them to dry to see if they are sturdy enough.

copper spires repeat

 Have been experimenting with a repeat print today. The final element was a quotation from a diary entry from Frances' and my trip to Copenhagen last year. This composition really reminds me of Bob Notley.

This will hopefully be the cover material for some sketch books I have bound to sell in my shop(s) so if you want, you can own a piece of this print for not too much money some time soon!

kino residency: production line

The last Cafe Kino event was a zine making workshop. It was lots of fun and loads of great zines were made. Thanks to the generosity of Steve Brett, you can see all the photos from that day on my flickr page. As well as Steve, massive thanks is also owed to Bob and Charlotte who helped make the day so great. 

kino residency: event 3

A day-long zine making workshop with Bob Notley and Henry Ireland. We will plan and fill a zine with your artwork and ideas and produce it together in a production line. There will be a whole bunch of mark making areas such as: cutting and sticking, screen printing, mono printing, typewriters and more!

Bob Notley studied fine art at the University of Plymouth. He has taken part in group shows with them lot and music and pictures in Bristol as well as solo shows in Luton. He now teaches a-level fine art.

Henry Ireland is artist in residence at Café Kino for 2012. He studied graphic communication with typography at the University of Plymouth and has lectured and taught graphic design and zine making. He makes and sells zines.

secret gallery installation idea

I work in an art gallery an an invigilator. One thing I am sure of is that many art gallery invigilators are also artists. While working on an upcoming project about working in art galleries, I had this idea.

It occurred to me that most artists who work as invigilators would love to have their work displayed in the galleries they work at. But, in the case of most, this is not going to happen. Unless you find an ingenious way to display your work surreptitiously, working it into your everyday routine. For most invigilators, the main part of their work routine is reading. So here you go:



create your composition to fit the dimensions of the book you are currently reading, then fold around the existing cover of the book.

Here is my design. It is a lino-cut, and I have turned the spine of the book into a brick wall to add some structure (not a pun... Well, maybe) to it.

getting ready for market

Today I have been getting stuff ready for the upcoming markets.

I have also been listening to Germ Free Adolescents by X-Ray Spex in memory of Poly Styrene.

She is one of my biggest heroes and I was so sad and surprised to learn of her death.

Just waiting for one side to dry. Also, recently visited Ed Ruscha Exhibition, Turner Prize 2009 and New Contemporaries (about which more later).

the fruits of an afternoon's lino-cutting

These are the last of the lino-cuts I needed to make for the object and eternity. They're the sharpest I've made so far. The essay if finished and foot-noted and ready for print. Tomorrow will be a combination of digitally printing the text and manually illustrating each page with the 9 seperate carvings I've made. I'm very excited right now.
